Upscale modes and when to pick which
The worker runs a super-resolution network with two tunings:
- Upscale (faithful) — enlarges 2× or 4× while preserving exactly what's in the frame; best for screenshots, product photos and artwork that are already clean.
- Restore (denoise + deblur first) — applies compression-artifact removal before enlargement; the right choice for old JPEGs, messaging-app-round-tripped images and low-light phone shots.
Output stays true to source colors (no hallucinated saturation) and arrives as PNG at 2048 px or 4096 px long edge depending on scale. Processing takes roughly 15–45 s per image; failures refund automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Is this really AI upscaling, not just bicubic resizing?⌄
Yes. Real-ESRGAN is a super-resolution neural network trained on millions of image pairs. Unlike simple resampling, it reconstructs detail (edges, hair, texture) that never existed in the low-resolution pixels.
What does Restore mode do differently?⌄
Restore runs an extra artifact-removal pass designed for old photos: JPEG blocking, blur and color fade are suppressed before the enlargement. For clean modern photos, plain Upscale is enough and a bit faster.
How large can the output be?⌄
2× and 4× are applied to the longer edge, so a 4000×3000 photo becomes 16000×12000 at 4×. Very large inputs are scaled down to fit server memory first — the page shows the exact limits.
Can it fix a tiny 200 px thumbnail?⌄
It will enlarge it sharply, but information that was never captured can't be invented — expect clean edges yet soft fine details like distant text. For text-heavy thumbnails, re-export from the original source when possible.

Privacy and limits: processing happens on the site's own server rather than in your browser — the photo is sent there, the AI model works on it, and the copy on the server is removed as soon as the job is done. You must be signed in, and each picture uses credits. Expect some waiting time: most photos are processed within about a minute or two, and the largest allowed files can take roughly half an hour of server time. Restore mode takes care of grain, blur and fading, but it is not a face beautifier — torn prints and missing regions are out of its reach.
