Tax Calculator
Estimate income tax for US, Germany, UK and China with progressive tax brackets
e.g. 401(k), social insurance — subtracted before tax
This is a simplified estimate for educational purposes. It does not include deductions, credits, social security, local taxes, or other factors. Consult a tax professional for accurate advice.
How bracket taxation really works
- Brackets tax slices of income, not the whole salary — crossing into a higher bracket never lowers take-home pay.
- The marginal rate applies to your last unit of income (overtime and deductions); the effective rate is total tax over total income.
- This calculator walks each bracket slice separately — exactly how filings do it.
Marginal rate vs effective rate
Four countries with their own rules
Switch between US federal brackets with filing status, Germany's progressive scale, UK bands with the personal allowance, and China's comprehensive income table — each jurisdiction's structure modeled separately.
Effective rate and marginal rate
The results show both the effective rate on your whole income and the marginal rate on your next dollar, so you see the average burden and the cost of earning more in the same view.
Deductions and bracket breakdown
Enter extra deductions on top of the standard deduction, then read off taxable income and a bracket-by-bracket tax list — the calculation behind the take-home figure is left on the table, not hidden.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this tax calculator?
It provides a simplified estimate using published tax brackets for each country. It does not include deductions, tax credits, social security contributions, local/state taxes, or other factors that significantly affect your actual tax bill. Use it for rough comparison, not for filing.
Why does the filing status only appear for the US?
The United States is the only country among the four where tax brackets differ by filing status (single, married filing jointly, head of household). For Germany, UK, and China, the tax brackets are the same regardless of marital status.
Will you add more countries?
The framework supports adding more countries — the tax brackets for each country are defined as a simple table. We plan to add more countries in future updates as we verify the latest tax data.
A raise pushed me into a higher bracket — can I lose money?
No. Only the portion above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate, so net pay always rises. What can bite are cliff effects outside income tax — benefit eligibility or deduction phase-outs — which live in their own rules, not in the bracket table.

What Is a Tax Calculator?
A tax calculator estimates the income tax owed on a gross annual salary under the progressive systems of four countries: the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and China. Each jurisdiction is modeled with its own brackets and allowances — the US with its filing-status-dependent standard deduction, the UK with the personal allowance folded into the bands, Germany with its progressive scale, and China with its annual comprehensive-income table and the 60,000-yuan threshold. The results show the estimated tax, the effective rate, the marginal rate, the take-home pay, and a bracket-by-bracket account of how the tax accumulates. A few typed inputs are all it takes — no forms to download, no spreadsheets to build.
What this tool can do
- 🌍 Four tax systems in one form: the US, Germany, the UK, and China.
- 🇺🇸 US filing status — single, married, or head of household — with the matching standard deduction.
- 💷 UK 2024/25 bands with the personal allowance, 🇩🇪 Germany’s progressive rates, 🇨🇳 China’s annual brackets and its 60,000-yuan allowance.
- ➖ Optional extra pre-tax deductions — a 401(k), for example, or China’s social-insurance contributions — applied before the brackets.
- 📊 Headline results: estimated tax, effective rate, marginal rate, take-home pay, and taxable income.
- 🧾 A bracket-by-bracket breakdown of how much tax each band contributes.
When would you use it
- 💼 Estimating take-home pay from a job offer before negotiating the salary.
- 🧾 Getting a rough sense of the year-end tax bill before filing.
- 🔍 Comparing how the same gross income is treated in different countries.
- 📉 Checking whether extra pre-tax contributions would meaningfully lower the bill.
All computation happens in your browser; income figures never leave the device and nothing is saved. Be clear about what this is: an estimate built on simplified rules. Itemized US deductions, UK national insurance, and most local or social taxes are not modeled, and rates change from year to year — so use it as a planning aid, and confirm the real numbers with the tax authority or a professional.
