Tip Calculator

Quick tip calculation, bill splitting, and per-person breakdown

$
%

The bill settled in two moves

  1. 1

Enter the total, choose a tip percentage, set how many people share.

  2. 2

Read per-person and grand totals, rounded the way your table prefers.

Rounding, service charge and local norms

  • Some countries expect 10–15%, others fold service into the bill already — tipping on top double-pays.
  • Rounding conventions vary: per person, on the total, or leave the coins — pick one style per table.
  • Split first, then tip: shares stay even. Tip first and split later distorts them.

Tipping customs differ more than the maths

🧭

15, 18, 20 or custom percent

One tap sets the tip to 15, 18 or 20 percent, or type any custom figure — the preset buttons match the percentages most check-splitting groups actually use.

🎲

Per-person breakdown for split checks

With the number of people set, you get the per-person share of the bill, the per-person tip and each person's total — the number to hand over when the table divides the check.

📌

Works beyond restaurant checks

The same three inputs fit taxis, delivery orders, haircuts and group expenses — bill, gratuity percent and people count are the only numbers involved.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split the tip unevenly?

This calculator splits everything evenly. For uneven splits, calculate the total tip, then manually divide it among your group based on what each person ordered or wants to contribute.

What tip percentage is standard?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 18–20% being common for good service. Customs vary by country — in some places tipping is not expected at all.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total including sales tax. This calculator does not distinguish — enter whichever amount you prefer to tip on.

What Is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator settles the arithmetic of dining out on one screen. You enter the bill, choose a tip percentage, and when the check is shared, the tool splits everything per person. It shows the tip amount, the total with tip, and then the per-person share of the bill, the per-person tip, and each person’s grand total. Although it was designed around restaurant checks, it works just as well for taxis, deliveries, haircuts, and any group expense where a gratuity and a split meet. Because the numbers refresh as you type, it also works as a quick sanity check before you hand over the card.

What this tool can do

  • 💵 Bill entry with one-tap presets for 15%, 18%, and 20%.
  • 🎛️ A custom percentage for service that deserves more — or less.
  • 👥 Splitting among any number of people, with per-person bill, tip, and total.
  • 🧾 The combined bill-plus-tip total shown right away.
  • 🔢 Every figure rounded to cents, so the split matches the card terminal.
  • ⚡ Instant recalculation as the bill, percentage, or headcount changes.

When would you use it

  • 🍽️ Settling a group dinner check without napkin math.
  • 🚕 Splitting a taxi fare and its tip between passengers.
  • 🛒 Dividing a takeout order with a flat gratuity among roommates.
  • 💳 Seeing the real dollar difference between 18% and 20% before choosing.

The arithmetic runs locally in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored. One honest limitation: the tool divides the total equally. When one person ordered the steak and another the salad, the equal split is a starting point that still needs manual adjustment — the calculator can’t know each order.
